Understanding Gender Socialization – Part 1

Unpacking Gender Socialization and Why It Matters At Roses Life Women Center

At Roses Life Women Center, we believe that empowering women starts with not only accessible resources but understanding how societal standards shape our behaviour, identities, and opportunities. A powerful yet invisible force is Gender Socialization, the process where we internalize and learn about ideas of what it means to be “female” or “male.”

What Is Gender Socialization?

Gender Socialization is a lifelong process where society shapes our habits, roles, and beliefs based on our gender. Beginning at a young age, we are taught which emotions, behaviours and careers are “suitable” for girls versus boys. This can happen without people even realizing it. These lessons come from schools, families, community, media and institutions.

These exceptions creation “norms” over time that influence;

  • How we communicate and express our emotions.
  • The career paths we aim for or achieve.
  • How women and men will see their worth.
  • How we lead, seek help or speak up.

Why Gender Socialization Matters Today For Women

For many women globally, these ingrained “norm” beliefs can limit women’s potential and create internal conflicts if what they want goes against societal expectations.

  1. Self Limiting Beliefs:
    – Gender Norms can lead women to undervalue and question their abilities and avoid leadership roles. The messages that support “be quiet, don’t take up too much space or don’t challenge,” is a subtle yet powerful message that influences women’s thinking.
  2. Mental and Emotional Impact:
    – If we don’t align perfectly with societal expectations, we face criticism, judgment and self doubt if we are ambitious or assertive. This creates internal tension which contributes to shame, stress and suppressed anger.
  3. Inequities In Opportunities:
    – Socialization plays a big part in why women are underrepresented in many career fields or why they take on more unpaid labour at home. These social norms have economic and social costs.
  4. Barriers To Healing
    – At Roses Life Women Center, many women who we have supported experienced systemic discrimination, marginalization and trauma. Gender Socialization makes it harder for women to ask for help, to view themselves as worthy and powerful or to speak up.
