Safety Planning Beyond Leaving Part 2

Safety planning is not just about leaving. A plan can also help you while you are still in the relationship, thinking about leaving, or if you have already left.

More Ways to Build a Safety Plan

Plan Your Safest Exit: Think about how you can leave quickly if needed. Know the exits, doors, transportation options, and where to go after leaving.

Create a Code Word: Choose a simple code word or phrase with your trusted person. This can discreetly let them know you are needing help without the abuser knowing.

Think About Digital Safety: Abusive partners can monitor emails, social media, or phones.

  • Turn off location sharing.
  • Use a safer device if you are searching for help.
  • Change passwords.

If Children Are Involved: If you have children, think through:

  • Who they can call.
  • Where they can go during conflicts.
  • How to dial emergency services – if age appropriate.
  • A safe meeting location.

Safety Planning Is About Reducing Risk
There isn’t a single correct timeline. Safety planning is about reducing potential risk and helping you plan ahead based on your own personal situations.
