Workplace Discrimination in Canada – Part 2

How To Recognize, Report and Recover

In Part 1, we went over what workplace discrimination is and the laws that are in place to protect you. In Part 2, we are going to focus on how to Recognize Discrimination, Report it and Protect your well being.

Recognizing Discrimination

Discrimination isn’t always as obvious as you’d think it would be. It can present as;

  • Heavier workloads for women who are also balancing family care.
  • Exclusions from training or meetings that other employees are receiving or attending.
  • Biased jokes or comments.
  • Unequal pay or missed promotions.

Small acts can create hostile, toxic and unfair workplaces.

How To Report It

  1. Document Everything: Times, dates, and evidence of each incident that has happened.
  2. Report it Internally: Speak with your HR, Manager, Supervisor or Union Rep.
  3. Seek External Help: Contact the Canadian Human Rights Commission or your Provincial Tribunal.
  4. Get Legal Support: An employment lawyer or an advocate who can help guide you with your next steps.

Complaints must be filed within 12 months of the incident(s).

Protecting Your Mental Health

Experiencing discrimination can emotionally drain you. Here are a few ways to help take care of yourself;

  • Seeking and talking to a therapist or counsellor.
  • Talking to your trusted friends, family or mentors.
  • Practice rest, mindfulness and self care.
  • Joining a Women’s Support Group.

You never have to go through this alone. There is always someone there to help you.

Employer’s Role

Employers can help prevent workplace discrimination by;

  • Encouraging respect and inclusion within the different levels of employees.
  • Promoting equal pay and opportunities for everyone.
  • Providing anti discrimination training.
  • Creating safe reporting systems.

Workplace equality will benefit everyone.
