Discrimination happens at work, in schools, and in public spaces. Discrimination can come from teachers, coaches, friends, co workers, managers, and or business owners.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Canadians all have the right to be treated fairly and respectfully in their workplaces and be free from discrimination. Canada has laws and programs in place to protect this right.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Canadian Laws That Are Protecting You<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>Canadian Human Rights Act <\/strong>prohibits discrimination on gender, race, ethnicity, disability and multiple other protected grounds. <strong>Canada\u2019s Employment Equality Act <\/strong>and <strong>Federal Contractors Program<\/strong> require employers to take proactive steps to improve employment opportunities for underrepresented groups &#8211; including women, Indigenous peoples, persons with disabilities, and members of visible minorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These laws help to ensure all Canadians can be safe, included and respected at their jobs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What is Prohibited?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under <strong>Canadian Law<\/strong>, employees are not allowed to discriminate against an employee or applicant due to;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Religion, National or Ethnic origin, colour, or race.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Age.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sexual orientation, gender, gender identity or expression.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mental or physical disabilities.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Indigenous identity.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Genetic characteristics.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A conviction which has been pardoned has been granted or record of suspended.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Types of Workplace Discrimination<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Harassment<\/strong>: Includes offensive, unwelcome behaviour, humiliation, intimidation, or anything that creates a hostile work environment.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Hostile Work Environment<\/strong>: Where discriminatory actions and or comments create a hostile and or unwelcoming atmosphere for employees in their workplace.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Indirect<\/strong>: When neutral policies or rules unintentionally give disadvantages to a protected group. Even if it isn\u2019t intentional or planned.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Direct<\/strong>: When it is obvious and based on someone\u2019s protected characteristics. When it explicitly singles out a group.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>How To Take Action?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you believe you\u2019ve been apart or seen workplace discrimination, there are different ways you can take action:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Contact the \u201cCanadian Human Rights Commission\u201d<\/strong>:<br>&#8211;<strong> File a complaint<\/strong> with the Commission, which will be investigated.<br>&#8211; <strong>Deadline<\/strong>: Your complaint needs to be filed within 12 months of the incident.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Seek Internal Help<\/strong>:<br>&#8211; Report the incident or issue with the HR Department, Supervisor or Union Representative.<br>&#8211; Keep all records of the incidents and communications that are related to your complaint.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Supporting Women\u2019s Rights at Work<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Women to this day continue to face challenges in their workplaces. Gender Bias, pay inequality, harassment, and underrepresented leadership roles.
